VITA E PENSIERO. - Monthly review founded in November 1914 by Fr. Agostino Gemelli, O. F. M., Dr. Vico Necchi, and Monsignor Francesco Olgiati.
The programme set forth in the first article by Fr. A. Gemelli, Il medioevalismo, acquired a historical significance; it meant the need for a return, not indeed to the thirteenth century, as though the past were to be relived, but to that conception of culture inspired by Christianity which was then able to create the glorious age of Francesco d'Assisi and Domenico di Gizzman and of the Universities founded by the Church, and which in our own day must give rise to a cultural movement characterized by the method of organic unity and the harmonious synthesis of knowledge, and by a programme of action and thought corresponding to present needs and modern achievements; it may therefore be said that V. e P. helped to prepare the establishment of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, inaugurated in 1921. The review has always remained faithful to this ideal. All the principal questions (religious, political, social, literary, artistic, etc.) are promptly addressed, in the light of the Christian idea, by the most eminent writers of the Italian Catholic world. Among its former contributors were Cardinal Maffi, Fr. Semeria, Filippo Meda, Filippo Crispolti, and Count Dalla Torre. Among its present contributors, besides Fr. Gemelli and Monsignor Olgiati, are the academician Pietro Rondoni, Maria Sticco, and Francesco Casnati. After an interval of suspension due to the Second World War, V. e P. resumed publication in 1947 with renewed ardour and springlike freshness. Giovanni Rinaldi
