VOLPE, GIOVANNI ANTONIO. - Bishop, born into a family originally from Bergamo, b. at Como on 30 Dec. 1513 to Giov. Pietro, d. there on 31 Aug. 1588.

He studied law at Pavia, but willingly devoted himself to literary studies, and good Latin verses by him survive, among them two fine satires in imitation of Horace. In 1542 he was enrolled in the College of Doctors at Como. He was in Rome with Card. Alessandro Farnese and there cultivated friendships with the best men of the Court. He was a canon and vicar general at Como when he was appointed bishop there on 17 Apr. 1559 and was consecrated on 16 July; he was nuncio in Switzerland a first time in 1560, and in Apr.-Dec. 1563 he took part in the Council of Trent; a second time in 1565 and a third in 1573-75.
