WEITENAUER, IGNAZ. - Jesuit, polyglot and exegete, b. at Ingolstadt on 1 November 1709, d. at Salem on 4 February 1783. Having entered the Society of Jesus in 1724, he taught Oriental languages at Innsbruck for 20 years. When the Order was suppressed (1773), he retired to the Cistercian abbey of Salem, continuing there his work as a writer.

W. composed many philological writings, some of them of a grammatical character on modern languages. An index of his piety and his zeal are the Subsidia eloquentiae sacrae (19 vols., Augsburg 1764-69). He wrote a Hierolexikon linguarum Orientalium (ibid. 1759), which reflects, also in its popularizing character, the state of Oriental studies of the time. He edited an edition of the Vulgate (Biblia sacra utriusque Testamenti, 7 vols., ibid. 1773) and a German translation, of which the New Testament came out in 2 vols. (ibid. 1777-78) and the whole Bible in 14 vols. (ibid. 1781-83). A much greater success was obtained by the brief biblical dictionary Lexikon biblicum in quo explicantur Vulgatae vocabula et phrases (Innsbruck 1758), reprinted several times (the last edition came out more than a century later at Turin, with the publisher Marietti, in 1866).
