WITTMANN, GEORG MICHAEL. – Bishop, b. 22 Jan 1760 at Finkenhamm (Upper Palatinate), d. 18 March 1833 at Regensburg.
Ordained priest at Regensburg (1782), after several years of pastoral care he became vice-rector (1788) and then rector (1803) of the seminary and parish priest of the cathedral of Regensburg (1804–29). A great friend of the poor and the sick, he devoted himself to the great fire that destroyed part of the city (1809) and to the spiritual care of French typhus patients in the military hospital. Auxiliary bishop (1829), then vicar general (1830), after the death of Bishop Michael Sailer (1832) he became diocesan bishop. He was venerated as a saint.
Among his works: *Principia catholica de S. Scriptura* (Regensburg 1793); *Die Heilige Schrift des Neuen Testamentes nach der Vulgata übersetzt* (Nuremberg 1808; 25 editions up to 1829, last ed. at Sulzbach in 1874).
