WITTMANN, GEORG MICHAEL. - Bishop, b. 22 Jan. 1760 at Finkenhammer (Upper Palatinate), d. 8 March 1833 at Ratisbona.
Ordained priest at Ratisbona (1782), after several years of pastoral care he became vice-rector (1788), then rector (1803) of the Seminary and parish priest of Ratisbona Cathedral (1804–29). A great friend of the poor and the sick, he devoted himself during the great fire that destroyed part of the city (1809) and to the spiritual assistance of Frenchmen ill with typhus in the military hospital. Auxiliary bishop (1829), then vicar general (1830), after the death of Bishop Michele Sailer (1832) he became diocesan bishop. He was venerated as a saint.
Among his works: Principia catholica de S. Scriptura (Ratisbona 1793); Die Heilige Schrift des Neuen Testamenten nach der Vulgata übersetzt (Nuremberg 1808: 25 eds. up to 1829, last ed. at Sulzbach in 1874).
