Cum ex hac Beati Petri Cathedra
Bull erecting the Diocese of Pembroke from the Apostolic Vicariate of Pontiac
BY WHICH THE APOSTOLIC VICARIATE OF PONTIAC IN CANADA IS ERECTED INTO THE DIOCESE OF PEMBROKE LEO PP. XIII TO THE PERPETUAL MEMORY OF THIS MATTER
1 From this blessed Chair of Peter, as from a lofty watchtower, We turn the eyes of Our mind to all parts of the Lord's flock, and We diligently strive to provide those things which can better serve the administration of sacred matters. Now indeed, since in the Apostolic Vicariate of Pontiac in the ecclesiastical province of Ottawa in Canada, erected already from the year 1882, the Catholic cause has been increased with happy growth, and flourishes in the number of the faithful and in institutions, it has seemed to Us most opportune to raise that Vicariate to the rank of a diocese. Therefore, having carefully and diligently weighed all matters of moment with Our Venerable Brothers the Cardinals S. Rh. HK. placed in charge of the affairs of the Propagation of the Faith, by Our own motion and from certain knowledge and mature deliberation of Ours, and from the fullness of Our Apostolic power, by the force of these presents, We erect the aforesaid Vicariate of Pontiac into a diocese, and We decree that the new diocese, named from the city of Pembroke, where its See is established, shall be called Pembroke. We further decree that, in accordance with the prayers presented to Us by common counsel by the Venerable Brethren the Bishop of Peterborough and the Apostolic Vicar of Pontiac, the new See of Pembroke shall be enlarged by the territory of the Mission commonly called Lake Timiskaming, to be dismembered from the diocese of Peterborough, and that to this diocese of Peterborough there shall in turn accede the Mission called Long Lake, which hitherto has belonged to the Vicariate of Pontiac. Decreeing that these present letters are firm, valid and effective and shall be and remain so, and shall obtain and secure their full and complete effects, and that they shall most fully avail in all respects and in every way for those to whom it pertains and may pertain, and thus in the foregoing matters by any ordinary or delegated judges judgment should be rendered and decision made, and that if anything contrary to these things should be attempted by anyone whatsoever with any authority, knowingly or unknowingly, it shall be null and void. Notwithstanding, insofar as it may be necessary, Our and the Apostolic Chancery's rule of not taking away acquired right, and other Apostolic Constitutions and Ordinances, and all other things acting to the contrary, even though worthy of special and individual mention and derogation. Given at Rome at St. Peter on 4 May 1898, in the twenty-first year of Our Pontificate.
