SUMMARY
Preamble. — 1. This Academy founded by King Dionysius, — 2. Enriched by Apostolic favors, — 3. And adorned with privileges by Nicholas. — 4. Conclusion.
Nicholas, bishop, servant of the servants of God, to the University of masters and scholars of Lisbon.

1 Concerning the state of the kingdom of Portugal, we think with such care, inasmuch as we are moved by the greater desire that in the kingdom itself, with all obstacles removed, the observance of divine worship may flourish, wholesome works may be undertaken, and the purity of the Catholic faith may grow strong to the praise of the divine name and the salvation of the faithful dwelling therein.

2 § 1. Indeed, it has come to our attention that this Academy, through the care of our most dear son in Christ, Dionysius, the illustrious King of Portugal, studies in every lawful discipline have been newly established in the city of Lisbon not without much and praiseworthy provision: to whose masters, so that they may be able to devote themselves more freely to studies and teachings, it is said that a certain fixed salary has been promised by certain prelates, abbots of the Cistercian order and priors of the orders of St. Augustine and St. Benedict, and rectors of certain secular churches of the kingdoms of Portugal and the Algarve.

3 § 2. We, however, attending more carefully to the fact that through such studies, with Him cooperating, from whom all good things proceed, divine worship will be increased in the kingdoms themselves, devotion will grow, and the cultivators of orthodox faith will receive instruction, will be adorned with the insignia of virtues, will claim the treasures of knowledge, and therefore, attending carefully to the increase and strengthening of these studies, and desiring also that through the aid of apostolic favor these studies may be supported by firm roots; and that what has been done in this matter we hold as ratified and approved, we earnestly beseech the aforesaid king and exhort him, that he compel the citizens of Lisbon by royal power to let vacant houses for habitation to scholars at a competent price, to be fixed by two clerics and as many laymen, men of discretion, Catholic and sworn, commonly elected by you and the said citizens; and that he cause his bailiffs, officials and ministers of the same city to promise security and immunity to the persons and property of scholars, and also to their messengers, with an oath taken by them upon this matter.

4 § 3. We decree furthermore, that all masters actually teaching in the aforesaid city may receive and have in full the revenues of their prebends and benefices, even if they be personates and dignities, except only the daily distributions which are assigned to those who attend divine offices. We ordain moreover, that no master and scholar and their servants, if, which God forbid, it should happen that they be found in any wrongdoing, shall be judged or even punished by any layman, unless perhaps they be condemned by the judgment of the Church and left to the secular court; that scholars in the arts and in canon and civil law, and in medicine, whom the masters shall deem suitable, may be licensed in the aforesaid Studio by the Bishop of Lisbon, who shall be for the time being, or, the see of Lisbon being vacant, by the vicar constituted by the chapter of Lisbon in spiritual matters. And whosoever master in the aforesaid city shall have been examined and approved by the bishop or vicar aforesaid in any faculty whatsoever, theology alone excepted, shall have free power of teaching everywhere without any other examination.

5 § 4. Let no one whatsoever be permitted to infringe this page of our statute, concession, etc., or to contravene it with rash presumption. If anyone, however, shall presume to attempt this, let him know that he will incur the indignation of almighty God and of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul. Given at the City, on the 11th day of August, in the 9th year of our pontificate, in the year of the Lord 1500.

SOMMARIO
Esordio. — 1. Questa Accademia fondata dal re Dionisio, — 2. Arricchita dai favori apostolici, — 3. E ornata di privilegi da Niccolò. — i. Clausola.
