Latissimi terrarum tractus
Apostolic letter appointing Robert St. Leger as Vicar Apostolic of Calcutta
To our beloved son Robert St. Leger, priest of the Society of Jesus
GREGORY PP. XVI.
Beloved son,
greetings and apostolic blessing.
1 The vast tracts of land which are subject to the dominion of the British and their magnificent company in the East Indies have often stirred Our solicitude, even from that time when we presided over the congregation of our venerable brothers, the cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, placed in charge of the affairs of the Propagation of the Faith. Then indeed, being promoted to the summit of the apostolate, God so disposing, we have had to think with much greater earnestness, given the weight of Our office, of amplifying the Catholic religion in the aforesaid regions. Since, however, among the three political prefectures which are established there, that of Calcutta appears to be principal both by reason of the seat of the supreme governor and the multitude of great cities and the diversity of peoples, we recognized that suitable preachers of the Gospel should be sent there before all others. While we were turning this over in our mind, letters also came to Rome not once from the Catholics, most pious citizens of the city of Calcutta, who were imploring the aid of Us and of the aforesaid congregation of the Propagation of the Faith; and they specifically requested that we should send priests of the Society of Jesus, whose illustrious reputation they said they had preserved among themselves, to Calcutta.
2 Willingly acceding therefore to these wishes of the Catholics and fulfilling Our apostolic office to the best of Our ability, by the counsel of those same venerable brothers of Ours, the cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, we commanded the general of the Society of Jesus to provide a select number of his members for this mission, among whom you, beloved son, distinguished in religious virtue and learning, were offered to Us. Wherefore, absolving you from any excommunication, suspension and interdict and other ecclesiastical censures, sentences and penalties imposed in any manner and for any cause whatsoever, should you have incurred any on this account, and considering you absolved; and wishing to invest you with the title and office of apostolic vicar, we have entrusted to you for the more fruitful exercise of that office (which we decree to be subject to the Apostolic See alone) sufficiently ample faculties, which flow from the fullness of Our power, so that in the populous city of Calcutta and its political prefecture you may sustain and amplify the Catholic religion; excepting only those places which our venerable brother Antoninus Pozzonius, bishop of Esbonensis, Our apostolic vicar in the Tibetan mission, administers either personally or through his missionaries of the order of Capuchins, and likewise those places which are subject to our venerable brother Frederick Cao, bishop of Zamensis, Our apostolic vicar in the kingdoms of Ava and Pegu; to which places we will that you extend your care only in place of the aforesaid vicars and with their permission: go forth therefore, beloved son, trusting in the protection of Almighty God and keeping before your eyes the ancient examples of your Society, and especially emulating the labors of St. Francis Xavier, proceed to the harvest offered to you with your companions, to whom we have also taken care to attach two young men of good hope and well instructed in good discipline from the Urban College of the Propagation of the Faith, and we have admonished them to obey your authority in spiritual matters.
3 Given at Rome at St. Peter's under the fisherman's ring on the eighteenth day of April in the year one thousand eight hundred and thirty-four, in the fourth year of Our pontificate.

Dilecto filio Roberto St. Leger presbytero Societatis Iesu
GREGORIUS PP. XVI.
Dilecte fili,
