Universi Dominici gregis

Brief erecting the Diocese of Pittsburgh

Brief of Pope Gregory XVI ·

of Our pontificate in the eleventh year.
(From Bull. de Propag. Fide, vol. 5, p. 170.)
THE DIOCESE OF PITTSBURGH IS ERECTED,
Gregory, Pope XVI. To the perpetual memory of the matter.

1 Bearing the care and solicitude of the entire flock of the Lord committed to Us by heavenly counsel, We ought to extend Our thoughts, cares and attention to the description of dioceses throughout the whole world, so that We may change or restrict their boundaries, as the condition of affairs and times and the welfare of the faithful may seem to require.

2 Accordingly, when in the Fifth Council of Baltimore held in the month of May 1843, among other matters undertaken for the good of the Catholic Religion in the provinces of the northern United States of America, consideration was also given to the manner in which in the very vast state of Pennsylvania the necessity and

4 growth of Religion might be constantly provided for, and when all the bishops gathered in the Council, having conferred among themselves, and especially the Venerable Brother Francis Patrick Kenrick, Bishop of Philadelphia, judged it proper to lay before Us that it would be very expedient for the good of the faithful that Western Pennsylvania, according to the boundaries received in the civil division, should be erected into a particular diocese distinct from Philadelphia: We committed this matter of such importance to Our Venerable Brothers, the Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, placed in charge of the affairs of the Propagation of the Faith, for examination. Having therefore carefully weighed the matter and taken into account the consent of the Bishop of Philadelphia concerning the separation of the aforesaid region of Pennsylvania from his episcopal see, and from the counsel of those same Brothers, We have found the aforesaid erection of a bishopric to be very useful. By Our own motion therefore and from certain knowledge, and from the fullness of apostolic power, We do by virtue of these present Letters erect and establish Western Pennsylvania, according to the boundaries received in the civil division, perpetually separated from the diocese of Philadelphia, into a particular bishopric, whose episcopal see shall be located in the city of Pittsburgh, and shall have as its cathedral the church of St. Paul the Apostle, long since built in the same city.

5 Decreeing these Letters to be firm, valid and efficacious and to remain so.... Given at Rome, at St. Mary Major, under the Fisherman's Ring, on 11 August 1843, in the thirteenth year of Our pontificate.

cato Nostro anno undécimo.
(Ex Biill. de Propag. Fide, tom. 5, pag. 170.)
SI ERIGE LA DIOCESI DI PITTSBURGO,
Gregorio Papa XVI.
