CHAPMAN, JOHN HENRY PALMER

CHAPMAN, JOHN HENRY PALMER. - Storico e critico benedettino inglese, n. a Ashfield (Suffolk) il 25 apr 1865, m. a Londra il 7 nov. 1933. Convertito dall'anglicanismo (1890) non senza l'influaso di Oxford, benedettino nella Congregazione di Beuron (a Maredsous, 1892), si trasferì nel 1919 in quella inglese. Fu superiore a Erdington (1895-1912) e a Caldey (1913-14), abate a Downside (1929-33). Svolse intensa attività letteraria, collaborando a vari periodici ed enciclopedie. Si distinse per la competenza in patologia e storia ecclesiastica: Bishop Gore and the Catholic Claims (Londra 1905); Studies in the Early Papacy (ivi 1928); St. Benedict and the Sixth Century (ivi 1929). Suo campo preferito fu la Bibbia: la critica del testo.
In Notes on the Early History of the Vulgate Gospels (Oxford 1908) rivelò dotti che gli fruttarono la nomina a membro della Pontificia commissione per la revisione della Vulgata (1913). Della sua attività romana, assieme con H. Quentin (1919-22), da menzionarsi The Families of Vulgate MSS in the Pentateuch (in Revue bénédictine, 37 [1925], pp. 5-46, 365-403). Si occupò anche dell'origine giovannea del IV Vangelo (John the Presbyter and the Fourth Gospel, Oxford 1911) e della questione sinottica (opera postuma, Londra 1937): Matthew, Mark and Luke. A Study in the Order and Interrelation of the Synoptic Gospels (priorità di Matteo greco!).
Negli ultimi suoi anni si volse ai problemi della vita spirituale: Contemplative Prayer, in Pax di Caldey, 5 (1913), pp. 339-44; Mysticism (Christian, Roman Catholic), in Enc. of Rel., IX, pp. 90-101; The Spiritual Letters (Londra 1935).
