Dum filii Belial

1 Diletti Figli, salute e Benedizione Apostolica.

SOCIETY OF CATHOLIC YOUTH AT BOLOGNA. POPE PIUS IX.

1 Beloved Sons, greetings and Apostolic Blessing. While the sons of Belial strive to propagate their dark associations for the ruin of religious and civil society, especially among young people: it was certainly to be desired that a Catholic gathering of youths would arise, which, raising aloft the standard of religion, would oppose itself to spreading impiety and break its assault. This purpose, which we have already blessed with good wishes, we now rejoice has been brought to completion through your association, which, soon increased by many pious adolescents, has resolved to strive earnestly for the cause of the Church and the salvation of souls. We are grateful to you, because, although you undertook this kind of struggle, you did not neglect admonitions or any diligence whatsoever, yet you determined above all to go before others in free and open exercise of piety, in the offices of mutual charity, in care to foster whatever may promote public worship, the moral instruction of the people, the defense of Catholic doctrine, and obedience to this Holy See: since nothing is accustomed to affect minds more effectively than example and to incite them to virtue. Moreover, we rejoice that this is especially your purpose, that through humble and fervent prayers you seek virtue from heaven for these endeavors of yours, since you know that neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase: for such constant supplication will certainly pierce the clouds, and will not depart until the Most High looks down. Continue therefore with alacrity in your undertaking, relying on this heavenly aid, and strive to enlist others and still others to yourselves, so that, more densely gathered and more firmly united, you may more easily overcome the enemies of the Christian name by the weapons of justice on the right hand and on the left. We, adding both spurs and reward to your zeal, comply with the prayers presented to us: and to all and each of those devoted to this Society, who, truly penitent and refreshed by holy communion, shall have prayed for the extirpation of heresies and the exaltation of Holy Mother Church, we grant a plenary indulgence on the day of each one's entrance into the Society, on the feast days or within the octaves of the Most Holy Virgin conceived without stain and of St. Peter the Apostle, Patrons of the Society, as well as on the feasts of the Blessed Mary Virgin under the title Help of Christians and of the Chair of Rome of the same Prince of the Apostles, also on the day to be appointed for expiation of deceased members and of those souls who have spent themselves in defense of the Church's cause: and finally we grant to the particular Councils or Circles of the Society that individual members may enjoy the benefit of the same indulgence on the feasts of the Patrons of each Circle. Moreover, we indulge in the Lord that all these indulgences may also be applied by way of suffrage to the souls of the Christian faithful who, joined to God in charity, have departed from this life, notwithstanding any contrary provisions. As a pledge of divine favor and of our paternal benevolence, we most lovingly impart the Apostolic Blessing to you and to the entire Society over which you preside. Given at Rome at St. Peter's on 2 May 1868.—In the twenty-second year of our Pontificate.
