stinurn statum in universo orbe catholico.

9 in vari modi in uno, vel pluribus collegiis, §. 1.

state throughout the whole Catholic world.
Pius bishop Servant of the servants of God To the memory of future ages.
1 § 4. The care of all churches, entrusted by God's disposition to Our humility, though unequal in merit and strength, compels Us to employ all those aids which are in Our power, and which divine providence mercifully supplies to Us, so that We may opportunely succor the spiritual necessities of the Christian world, as far as the diverse and manifold changes of times and places permit, making no distinction among peoples and nations.
2 § 2. Desiring to satisfy this duty of Our pastoral office, there came to Us, both then living and now, Francis Kareu and other secular priests, who for many years have been in the vast Russian empire, and formerly devoted to the Society of Jesus suppressed by Our predecessor of happy memory Clement XIV, and they presented to Us petitions in which they humbly begged that by Our authority they might be permitted to coalesce into one body, so that they might more easily work according to the plan of their own institute in instructing youth in the rudiments of faith and imbuing them with good morals, undertake the office of preaching, apply themselves to hearing confessions, and administer the other sacraments: We deemed it right to accede to their prayers the more willingly because the Emperor Paul the First, reigning at that time, had earnestly commended these same priests to Us in his most gracious letters given to Us on the eleventh day of August in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred, in which, signifying his singular benevolence toward them, he declared it would be pleasing to him if the Society of Jesus were established by Our authority in his Catholic empire. § 3. Wherefore We, giving careful consideration to how great the advantages would be to those most extensive regions, almost destitute of workers for the Gospel, and how much increase the ecclesiastical men of this kind, whose approved morals were commended with such praises, would bring to the Catholic religion through assiduous labor, intense zeal for procuring the salvation of souls, and untiring preaching of the divine word: We judged it consonant with reason to comply with the wishes of so great and so beneficent a prince. Therefore by Our letters in the form of a brief given on the seventh day of March in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and one, to the aforesaid Francis Kareu and his other companions dwelling in the Russian empire, or who might be able to betake themselves thither from elsewhere, We granted the faculty that it should be free for them to join and unite themselves into one body or congregation of the Society of Jesus, in one or more houses at the discretion of the superior, within the limits of the Russian empire to be designated; and We appointed the same presbyter Francis Kareu as general superior of that congregation to Our and the Apostolic See's good pleasure with the necessary and appropriate faculties, so that they might retain and follow the rule of St. Ignatius of Loyola approved and confirmed by Our predecessor of happy memory Paul III in his apostolic constitutions; and so that in this way the companions gathered together in one religious community might freely work at instructing youth in religion and good arts, govern seminaries and colleges; and with the approval and consent of the local ordinaries, might freely hear confessions, announce the word of God, and administer the sacraments; and We received the congregation of the Society of Jesus under Our and the Apostolic See's immediate protection and subjection, and those things which seemed to Us expedient in the Lord for establishing and strengthening it, and for purging it from abuses and corruptions which might have crept in, We reserved to be prescribed and sanctioned by Us and Our successors:

6 various matters concerning the regulation of the Apostolic See seemed to Us expedient to be purged in the Lord, We reserved to be prescribed and sanctioned by Us and Our successors: and to this effect We expressly derogated from the apostolic constitutions, statutes, customs, privileges, and indults in any way granted and confirmed to the contrary of the aforesaid, especially from the apostolic letters of Our aforesaid predecessor Clement XIV beginning with "Dominus ac redemptor noster" in those matters only which would be contrary to Our said letters in the form of a brief, whose beginning is "Catholicae" and granted only for the Russian empire.
7 § 4. The counsels which We decreed should be undertaken for the Russian Empire, We determined should be extended not long after to the kingdom of both Sicilies, at the entreaties of Our most beloved son in Christ, Ferdinand, king, who petitioned Us that the Society of Jesus, in the manner in which it had been established by Us in the aforesaid empire, should likewise be established and confirmed in his dominion and territories; since in those most sorrowful times he judged it especially opportune to employ the labors of the clergy of the regular Society of Jesus, principally in colleges and public schools, for instructing young people in Christian piety and fear of the Lord, which is the beginning of wisdom, and in doctrine and sciences. We, desiring to comply with the duties of Our pastoral office by acceding to the pious desires of so illustrious a prince, which looked solely to the greater glory of God and the salvation of souls, extended Our letters given for the Russian Empire to the kingdom of both Sicilies by new letters in similar form, beginning "Per alias," issued on the thirtieth day of July in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and four. § 5. For the restoration of this same Society of Jesus, with almost unanimous consent of the whole Christian world, urgent and pressing petitions are brought daily to Us from Our venerable brothers the archbishops and bishops, and from the assembly and gathering of all persons of distinguished rank; especially since the report has been spread everywhere of the most abundant fruits which this Society had produced in the aforesaid regions; which, as the offspring growing daily, was thought to be adorning and extending the Lord's field most widely. § 6. The very dispersion of the stones of the sanctuary on account of recent calamities and vicissitudes, which it is better to lament than to recall to memory; the failing discipline of the regular orders (the splendor and pillar of religion and the Catholic Church) which now require repair—these direct Our thoughts and cares, and demand that We give Our assent to so worthy a cause sought by common prayers. For We would believe ourselves guilty of a most grave crime in the sight of God if in such great necessities of the commonwealth We should neglect to employ those salutary aids which God has provided to Us by singular providence, and if We, placed in Peter's boat tossed and shaken by constant storms, should reject those who are experienced and strong and offer themselves to Us as helmsmen to break the shipwreck of the sea threatening Us and destruction at any moment.
8 § 7. Moved by so many and such weighty considerations and causes, We have at length determined to execute what We ardently desired at the very beginning of Our pontificate. After therefore imploring divine aid with fervent prayers, having heard the counsel and advice of many of Our venerable brothers, cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, from certain knowledge and from the fullness of apostolic power, We have decreed and determined to ordain and establish, and by this Our perpetual constitution We do ordain and establish, that all concessions and faculties granted to Us for the Russian Empire and the kingdom of both Sicilies alone, now extended, shall be understood and held as extended, as We truly extend them, to Our entire ecclesiastical state, and equally to all other states and dominions. § 8. Wherefore We grant and bestow upon Our beloved son, the presbyter Thaddaeus Brzozowski, present superior general of the Society of Jesus, and upon others legitimately deputed by him, all necessary and suitable faculties at Our and the Apostolic See's pleasure, so that in all the aforesaid states and dominions all those who seek to be admitted and incorporated into the regular order of the Society of Jesus may freely and lawfully be admitted and incorporated, who in one or more of the

The members present are permitted in one or several provinces under letters, and in them whatever is contained by the general superior existing for the time being in obedience joined, and, as circumstances shall require, distributed, according to the prescription of the rule of St. Ignatius of Loyola approved and confirmed by the apostolic constitutions of Paul III, let them accommodate their manner of proceeding: we also grant and declare that likewise to the instruction of Catholic youth in the rudiments of religion and in good morals, and to govern seminaries and colleges, with the consent and approbation of the ordinaries of the places in which it shall happen that they dwell, they may freely and lawfully hear confessions, preach the word of God and administer the sacraments: moreover all colleges, houses, provinces, and associates thus joined, and whom it shall happen to be joined and aggregated in the future, we now place under the immediate protection of Us and of this apostolic See, to remain firm, valid and effective always and perpetually, and to produce and obtain their full and complete effects, and to be inviolably observed by those to whom it pertains, and by whomever it shall pertain for the time being; and thus, and not otherwise by any judges whatsoever exercising any power, it ought to be judged and determined; and if anything contrary to these things shall happen to be attempted by anyone whatsoever with any authority, knowingly or unknowingly, it shall be null and void.
10 §. 42. Notwithstanding the apostolic constitutions and ordinances, and especially the aforesaid letters in the form of a brief of happy memory Clement XIV beginning "Dominus ac Redemptor Noster" sent under the fisherman's ring on the twenty-first day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy-three, and obedience we receive; we do not intend to derogate from those which were expressly and specially intended for the effect of the aforesaid and our successors the Roman pontiffs reserving to us to establish and prescribe those things which shall seem expedient for the same Society to be more and more established and strengthened, and to be purged from abuses, if perchance (which God forbid) they shall have crept in, and to prescribe: to all and singular the superiors, subjects, rectors, associates, and any others whatsoever of this restored Society, as much as we are able in the Lord we admonish and exhort, that in every place and time they show themselves faithful followers and imitators of so great a parent and founder, accurately observe the rule prescribed by him, and strive with the greatest zeal to carry out the useful admonitions and counsels which he gave to his sons: against all other things whatsoever.
11 § 4 5. We wish, moreover, that copies or even printed exemplars of these same present letters, subscribed by the hand of some public notary and furnished with the seal of a person established in ecclesiastical dignity, shall receive the same faith entirely in judicial proceedings and outside them as would be given to these same presents if they had been exhibited or shown. • and to prescribe those things which to the same Society being more and more established and strengthened, and to be purged from abuses, if perchance (which God forbid) they shall have crept in, it shall have seemed expedient to establish and prescribe. [[fn:ad § 9.]] All and each of the superiors, inferiors, professed members, rectors, associates, coadjutors and helpers of whatever kind of this restored Society we admonish as much as we are able in the Lord, and we exhort, that in every place and time they show themselves faithful followers and imitators of so great a father and founder, that they carefully observe the rule established and prescribed by him, and that they strive with the greatest zeal to carry out the useful admonitions and counsels which he handed down to his sons.
12 §. 40. Finally to our beloved in Christ illustrious and noble men, princes and temporal lords, and to our venerable brothers archbishops and bishops and others established in any dignity, we commend the aforesaid Society of Jesus and each of its associates most highly in the Lord, and we exhort and beseech them not only that they permit them to be troubled by no one and suffer it, but that they receive them kindly, as is fitting, and with charity. §. 41. Let no one whatsoever presume to infringe this page of our ordinance, statute, extension, confession, indult, declaration, faculty, reception, reservation, admonition, exhortation, decree, and derogation, or to act against it with rash presumption; if anyone however shall presume to attempt this, let him know that he shall incur the indignation of almighty God and of the blessed apostles Peter and Paul his. Given at Rome at St. Mary Major in the year of the incarnation of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ninety-four, on the seventh day of August, in the fifteenth year of our pontificate.
