ABBADIE, ANTOINE d'. - Explorer, geographer, astronomer, b. in Dublin, of a French family that had emigrated, on 9 January 1810, and d. in Paris on 19 March 1897. Having returned to Toulouse, he prepared for voyages of exploration in Africa, together with his brother Arnaud, five years younger than he, who preceded him to Cairo (1838), while he went to Brazil on a state assignment. Having later joined his brother, he met at Massawa the Lazarist missionary G. Sapeto (v.) and began (1840) the great geodetic and cartographic survey of Ethiopia. Like his brother - who became a ras - he made himself loved by the natives as no other traveler did - as Massaua (v.) attests - both for his assiduous labors and his unblemished morals, so much so that he was taken for a monk or a priest. Having pushed as far as Kaffa, he wrote to the Congregation of Propaganda Fide a letter in which, after describing the conditions of the Galla, he called for the founding of a Catholic mission, which Gregory XVI immediately established, creating a vicariate and entrusting it to Monsignor Massaua. The Pope, who had already made him a knight of St. Gregory, sent him a warm thanks. Having returned to France (1848), the d'A. brothers continued their studies and scientific travels. Arnaud published the first volume of Douze ans dans la Haute-Ethiopie ou Abyssinie (1868) and Antoine the classic work Géographie d'Ethiopie.
