Achtermann, Theodor Wilhelm

ACHTERMANN, THEODOR WILHELM. - Sculptor, b. in 1799 at Münster, d. in 1884 at Rome. A pupil of Fr. Tieck and of Rauch at the Berlin Academy, but resistant to the cold classicism and the "enlightened" Protestantism of that milieu, in 1840 he moved to Italy, where he adhered to the ideals of the "Nazarenes" (v.). His masterpieces are a large Pietà and a colossal group of the Deposition (1858), both in the cathedral of Münster. At Rocca di Papa a collection of plaster casts of his works is arranged.
