ACHTERMANN, THEODOR WILHELM. – Sculptor, born in 1799 in Münster, died in 1884 in Rome. A pupil of Fr. Tieck and Rauch at the Berlin Academy, but resistant to the cold classicism and the «enlightened» Protestantism of that milieu, in 1840 he moved to Italy, where he embraced the ideals of the «Nazarenes» (v.). His masterpieces are a large Pietà and a colossal group of the Deposition (1858), both in Münster Cathedral. At Rocca di Papa there is a collection of plaster casts of his works.
