ACHTERMANN, THEODOR WILHELM

ACHTERMANN, THEODOR WILHELM. - Sculptor, born in 1799 at Münster, died in 1884 at Rome. A pupil of Fr. Tieck and Rauch at the Berlin Academy, but resistant to the cold classicism and the “enlightened” Protestantism of the milieu, in 1840 he moved to Italy where he adhered to the ideals of the “Nazarenes” (q.v.). His masterpieces are a large Pietà and a colossal group of the Deposition (1858), both in the cathedral of Münster. At Rocca di Papa there is a plaster-cast gallery of his works.
