AERTNYS, JOZEF. - Moralist, born in Eindhoven on 5 January 1828, died on 30 June 1915. He became a Redemptorist novice in St. Trond (Belgium) in 1845, took his vows the following year together with the well-known convert Isaac Hecker, and was ordained priest in Liège on 14 December 1854. From 1860 to 1898 he taught moral theology at the convent in Wittem (Netherlands), where he himself had completed his philosophical and theological studies, and where the future cardinals Dechamps and Van Rossum taught dogmatic theology. In 1901 he founded, together with Monsignor Schaepman, the theological-pastoral periodical Nederlandsche Katholieke Stemmen, to which he contributed actively.
The principal work of A. is the *Theologia moralis secundum doctrinam s. Alphonsi de Ligorio Doctoris Ecclesiae*, first published in 1886; a widely esteemed manual which, after the author’s death, was completed and updated by C. Damen and has now reached its 15th edition (Tournai 1947). A. also authored: a *Theologia pastoralis seu Praxis confessorium* (5th ed., Gulpen 1916), a *Caeremoniae sollemnium functionum* (3rd ed., edited by P. Pluvius, ’s‑Hertogenbosch 1921), and a *Compendium Liturgiae Sacrae* (10th ed., edited by P. Dankelman, Turin 1936).
