AICHINGER, Gregor. – Composer, b. at Ratisbon in 1564, d. at Augsburg on 21 Jan. 1628. He studied at Ingolstadt, served as organist for Jakob Fugger and at St. Ulrich and Afra in Augsburg; in the years 1584–87 he traveled in Italy for study, chiefly in Venice with GIOVANNI GABRIELI, and in Rome; at Augsburg he was vicar of the cathedral choir and canon of St. Gertrude.
A very prolific composer of polyphonic sacred music, marked by classical simplicity and purity, among which are to be noted the Sacrae cantiones for 4 to 10 voices (3 books, 1590–97), various Cantiones ecclesiasticae ad IV voces (1607–1609), Lacrymae D. Virginis et Johannis (1604), Tricinia Mariana (1598), numerous masses, Magnificats, and various sacred compositions.
