AICHINGER, GREGOR. - Composer b. in Regensburg in 1564, d. in Augsburg on 21 Jan. 1628. He studied in Ingolstadt, was organist in the service of Jakob Fugger and at Sts. Ulrich and Afra in Augsburg; in the years 1584-87 he traveled in Italy for study purposes, mainly to Venice with Giovanni Gabrieli, and to Rome; in Augsburg he was vicar of the cathedral choir and canon of St. Gertrude.

A very prolific composer of polyphonic religious music, set to classical simplicity and purity, among which are to be remembered the Sacrae cantiones for 4 to 10 voices (5 books, 1590-97), various Cantiones ecclesiasticae for several voices (1607-1609), Lacrymae D. Virginis et Johannis (1604), Tricinia Mariana (1598), numerous masses, Magnificat and various religious compositions.
