AICHER, OTTONE. - Benedictine of the Bavarian abbey of St. Veit, b. in an unspecified place in 1628, d. at Salzburg in 1705. In Germany he did honor to scholarly studies, as in France and Belgium did his confreres in the same century. He turned to history, with a preference for Roman history, but did not disdain to occupy himself also with cosmography, epigraphy and Latin and Greek literature (Cicero, Livy, Tacitus, etc., Aristotle). He also took delight in poetry. Among his works let us recall: Epitome historiae universalis (Salzburg 1689); Infantia et adolescentia Romae (ibid. 1693); Iuventus et maturitas Romae (Würzburg 1700).
