ALAMANNI, COSIMO. - A renowned cultivator of Thomist philosophy, b. in Milan in 1559 and d. there on 24 May 1624. He entered the Society of Jesus young (1575), and, after the usual training, was sent to complete his studies in Rome, where he had Suarez and Vasquez as teachers. Having returned to Milan, he was professor of philosophy, then of theology and finally of casuistry at the Brera College. In 1606 he went to the episcopal curia of Pavia, where he remained for 20 years, as theologian consultor to the bishop. During this time he devoted himself to compiling his: Summa philosophiae ex variis libris d. Thomae in ordinem cursus philosophici accommodata, published for the first time at Pavia in the years 1618-29, and praised by Leo XIII. In 1623 he returned to Milan, where he still worked assiduously, in addition to the exercise of his ministry, also as prefect of studies at the Brera College.
