ALLAMANO, GIUSEPPE. - Priest, founder of the Istituto della Consolata per le Missioni estere and of the Suore missionarie della Consolata, b. at Castelnuovo d'Asti (Don Bosco) on 21 Jan. 1851, d. at Torino on 16 Feb. 1926. Nephew of St. Giuseppe Cafasso, he had the good fortune to complete his secondary studies under the guidance of St. Giovanni Bosco. Ordained priest in Torino on 20 Sept. 1873, in 1880 he was appointed rector of the sanctuary of the Consolata, which he radically transformed, making it one of Italy’s most vibrant centres of Marian devotion. In 1882 he restored the Convitto ecclesiastico to new life, remaining its rector throughout his life. In 1883 he became a canon of the cathedral of Torino. Among the many charitable works promoted or supported by him, the principal one, in which he had as an effective collaborator Can. Giacomo Camisassa, another distinguished figure of priest and apostle, remains the foundation of the
Istituto per le Missioni estere (v. ISTITUTO MISSIONI CONSOLATA), accomplished, after years of difficulties and opposition, in 1901; this was followed in 1910 by the foundation of the Suore missionarie della Consolata; institutions which he governed until his death. He died with a reputation for holiness, after having promoted and successfully brought to completion the cause for the beatification of his uncle. The process for his beatification is under way at the archiepiscopal curia of Torino.
