Alexander, Metropolitan of Gerapoli

ALESSANDRO, metropolitan of GERAPOLI. — He took part in the Council of Ephesus, protesting that the so-called Orientals had not been awaited, namely the patriarch of Antioch, Giovanni, together with his suffragans, who were favorable to Nestorius and therefore opposed to Cirillo Alessandrino. He was excommunicated together with them in the fourth session of the council. When the Orientals subsequently accepted the doctrine of Cirillo, adopted by the Council of Ephesus, he also broke with them. He was therefore exiled by the civil authorities to Egypt, where he died around 434. Of his writings, 23 letters survive, preserved in the Synodicon adversus Tragoediam Irenaei of the deacon Rustico, from chapter 54 to 182, passim: PG 84, 659–798 (Mansi, V, 830–960, passim).
