ALEXANDER, Metropolitan of Gerapoli. - He took part in the Council of Ephesus, protesting that the so-called Orientals had not been awaited, that is, the patriarch of Antioch, John, with his suffragans, who favored Nestorius and were therefore opposed to Cyril of Alexandria. He was excommunicated with them in the fourth session of the council. After the Orientals subsequently accepted the doctrine of Cyril, which had been adopted by the Council of Ephesus, he broke with them as well. He was therefore exiled by the civil authority to Egypt, where he died around 434. Of his writings there remain to us 23 letters preserved in the Synodicon adversus Tragoediam Irenaei of the deacon Rusticus, from ch. 54 to 182, passim: PG 84, 659-798 (Mansi, V, 830-960, passim).
