AMADEO, JOÃO DA SILVA Y MENEZES. - Portuguese Franciscan, born of a noble family between 1420 and 1435, died in Milan in 1484. He is called Amadeus lusitanus (not hispanus), but in Portugal and Spain he left no trace of himself. Toward the middle of the 15th century he landed in Italy in the habit of a pilgrim, and, having become a Franciscan, he founded a Congregation of Reformed Franciscans, which, starting from the convent of Oreno near Vimercate, spread particularly in Lombardy, with a convent in Milan (S. Maria della Pace); it also had one in Rome (S. Pietro in Montorio). He also lived in this latter city, and Sixtus IV chose him as his confessor. His friars were called Amedeiti and were united by St. Pius V with the Minors in 1568. Two works are attributed to him that do not belong to him, namely a Nova Apocalypse, and a book of Homilies, the latter of which are instead by a Cistercian monk, later bishop of Lausanne. Some documents were recently published about him and his religious activity.
