AMMONIO DI ALESSANDRIA

AMMONIUS OF ALEXANDRIA. - Priest and steward of the Church of Alexandria, in the second half of the 5th century; in 458 he signed the letter of the bishops of Egypt to the emperor Leo I in favor of the Council of Chalcedon; he composed a work, now lost, against Eutyches and Dioscorus, and was distinguished as an exegete.

Of his commentaries on Holy Scripture we possess only fragments, scattered through the Catenae and collected in PG 85, 1361-1510 and 1823-26 (cf. J. Reuss, Der Exeget Ammonius und die Fragmente seines Matthäus-und Johannes-Kommentar, in Biblica, 22 [1941], pp. 13-120).
