AMMONIUS of ALEXANDRIA. — Priest and steward of the Church of Alexandria in the second half of the 5th century; he signed, in 458, the letter of the bishops of Egypt to Emperor Leo I in favour of the Council of Chalcedon; he composed a work, now lost, against Eutyches and Dioscorus and distinguished himself thereby.
Of his commentaries on Holy Scripture only fragments survive, scattered in the Catenae and collected in PG 85, 1361-1610 and 1823-26 (cf. J. Reuss, Der Evangelium und die Fragmente seines Matthäus- und Johannes-Kommentar, in Biblica, 22 [1941], pp. 13-120).
