AMMONIO of ALESSANDRIA. – Priest and steward of the Church of Alexandria in the second half of the 5th century; in 458 he signed the letter of the bishops of Egypt to the emperor Leo I in favor of the Council of Chalcedon; he composed a lost work against Eutyches and Dioscorus and distinguished himself as an exegete.
Of his commentaries on Sacred Scripture, we possess only fragments, scattered throughout the Catenae and collected in PG 85, 1361–1510 and 1823–26 (cf. J. Reuss, Der Exeget Ammonius und die Fragmente seines Matthäus- und Johannes-Kommentar, in Biblica, 22 [1941], pp. 13–120).
