ANAPHORA (Ἀναφορά: Presentation, Offering). - It originally designated the bread to be offered in the Mass, and later became a generic name for the Mass itself. In the Eastern liturgies it means more properly the principal part of the Sacrifice, which corresponds to the Canon of the Latin Mass with the Preface and the prayers for Communion. E. Renaudot (Liturgiarum Orientalium Collectio, I, 2nd ed., Frankfurt am Main 1847, pp. 172, 224; II, id., ibid., pp. 45, 75) offers 38 different formulary texts, to be used on different days. The oldest anaphora that has been preserved in its entirety is that of St. Serapion, bishop of Thmuis in Egypt (4th century). Fragments of other, more remote ones are those of St. Mark, of the Didaché, of the papyrus of Der-Balyzeh, of St. James.
Among the Syrians the name of anaphora also serves to indicate the veil which after the Consecration covers the chalice and the paten.
