Also known as:
Andrea d'Assisi called l'Ingegno;
Italian: l'Ingegno, Andrea di Aloigi
INGEGNO, Andrea d'Aloigi d'Assisi, Called. - Umbrian painter whose personality still remains not clearly defined; the reconstruction attempted by some scholars does not always seem to have very secure foundations, for works of certain attribution are lacking.
The catalogue of paintings assigned by A. Venturi to the I. is based on documentary notices and on the words of Vasari, who points to him as the best of Perugino's pupils, deploring how an eye disease cut short his brilliant career. In the documents he is remembered in the capacity of painter from 1484 to 1490, when he collaborates with Perugino at the cathedral of Orvieto; from 1501 to 1516 he appears instead invested with administrative offices in Assisi.
