ANIANO di CELEDA. – The deacon A. of Celeda (an unknown locality) was one of the most ardent defenders of the Pelagian heresy. After St. Jerome, in one of his letters (Epist. 133), had associated the heresy of Pelagius with the doctrines of Mani, Priscillian, Jovinian, Rufinus, and Evagrius Ponticus, A. wrote, between 418 and 420, in refutation of this opinion. His work has been lost. A. of Celeda is usually identified with Anianus, the translator of various homilies of Chrysostom. The translation is in rhythmic prose, and A. reveals himself to be an expert in both languages. His Latin, considering the period, is correct and even ornate. It is probable that Pelagius made use of A. in compiling his works, since certain linguistic affinities can be observed between the two authors. A specimen of A.’s original style is found in the letters to the priest Evangelius and to the bishop Orontius, placed before the translations of Chrysostom’s homilies.
