ANTIMUS VI, Patriarch of Constantinople. - He occupied the patriarchate three times in the years 1845-48, 1853-55, 1871-73, after having been a monk at Athos and metropolitan of Serres, Brusa and Ephesus; he died in 1878. In 1848, in response to the encyclical of Pius IX In suprema Petri Apostoli Sede (6 Jan. 1848) which invited the separated Easterners to union, A. published together with the patriarchs Hierotheus of Alexandria, Methodius of Antioch and Cyril of Jerusalem the so-called Encyclical of the Patriarchs, although the true author of the letter was Constantine Sinaites, formerly patriarch of Constantinople (1830-34). In the Encyclical of the Patriarchs the Papacy and "the ambition" of the Church of Rome are presented as a body of doctrinal errors and of reprehensible liturgical and canonical practices.
