Ararat

Also known as: Mount Ararat

ARARAT. - Mountainous region between the river Araxes and lakes Van and Urmia. This geographical name from the Old Testament (Gen. 8:4; 2 Kings 19:37; Isa. 37:38; Jer. 51:27) corresponds roughly to the Urartu of the Assyro-Babylonian documents and to present-day Armenia.

Berosus (according to Flavius Josephus, Antiq. Jud., I, 93) and the Targumim identified the A. of Genesis with Kurdistan. Only later, through an erroneous exegesis of Gen. 8:4 (Noah's ark after the flood came to rest "on the mountains of A."), was the A. considered a specific mountain, identified with the present-day A., called in Persian Kôh-i-Nûh, "Mountain of Noah," whose highest peak rises to 5156 m.
