ARANEO, CLEMENTE. - Dominican preacher and controversialist of the 16th century, born at Ragusa (Dalmatia).
He appears in 1547 as a member of the province of Lombardy, residing at Pesaro. He published at Venice (1541) a large volume of Socri sermones (de Verbo Incarnato XXIV, de materiis particularibus LXXXVI), reprinted—probably after the author’s death—at Brescia in 1586. An «Eximius theologus» (Hurter), in the 1st sermon he insists on the necessity of good works; in the 3rd he alludes to the faults of paganizing humanism in relation to the religious situation of that time; in the 5th he deals with the suffrages of the Mass and indulgences for the souls in purgatory. The work Expositio cum resolutionibus occurrentium dubiorum etiam Lutheranorum... super epistolam Pauli ad Romanos (Venice 1547) places him among Luther’s literary opponents.
