ARANEO, CLEMENTE. - Dominican preacher and controversialist of the 16th century, born in Ragusa (Dalmatia).
He appears in 1547 as a member of the Lombardy province, residing in Pesaro. In 1541 he published in Venice a substantial volume of *Sacri sermones* (24 on the Incarnate Word, 86 on particular topics), which was reprinted—probably after the author’s death—in Brescia in 1586. As an *Eximius theologus* (Hutter), in the first sermon he stresses the necessity of good works, in the 38th he alludes to the faults of paganizing humanism for the religious situation of the time, and in the 51st he treats of suffrages from the Mass and indulgences for the souls in purgatory. The work *Expositio cum resolutionibus occurrentium dubiorum etiam Lutheranorum... super epistolam Pauli ad Romanos* (Venice 1547) places him among the literary opponents of Luther.
