ORNAN (Heb. 'Ornān; in 2 Sam. 24:16-25 Vulg. Araunah, Heb. 'Arawnāh). - Name, of Hurrian or Hittite origin, of a Jebusite living in Jerusalem at the time of David, owner of a threshing floor on the highest spot

of Mount Moriah. During the plague brought about by the census ordered by David, the avenging angel was seen by the King near that threshing floor. Having bought it immediately from the Jebusite for the price of 50 shekels (a different, but improbable, figure in Chronicles), he built an altar there on which he offered sacrifices: and the scourge ceased (II Sam. 24:16-25; I Chron. 21:15-28). On the site of that altar the Temple was later built by Solomon.
