Attilanus, Saint

ATTILANO, saint. – Bishop of Zamora. When, at the end of the 9th century, Alfonso III, king of Asturias (d. 910), reconquered the cities of León and Zamora from the Arabs, he appointed as their first bishops the two friends and companions in ascetic life, Froilano and A. The day of A.’s death is 5 October. We have no authentic or historical Lives of him, and his alleged canonization by Urban II is today considered nonexistent. His name is absent from the ancient martyrologies.
