AUCHER, GIOVANNI BATTISTA. - Mechitarist of Venice, b. at Ancira in 1762, d. at Venice in 1854. Ordained priest on 4 Jan. 1786, he was assistant general of the Congregation for 30 years and, for twenty, vicar general, without ever neglecting, throughout fully 65 years, his intellectual activity.
He wrote: Ascetical and spiritual works, all published at Venice in Armenian: On Our Four Ends, 1810. - Hagiographical works: Complete Life and Martyrology of All the Saints of the Calendar of the Armenian Church, 12 vols., according to the Armenian, Greek, Latin, and Syriac menologies, with extensive critical notes on each saint, 1810-15; Florilegium of the Saints, 1800. - Patristic works and textual publications: Eusebius’s Chronology, preserved in the ancient Armenian translation, published by A. together with his own Latin translation: Eusebi... Chronicon bipartitum nunc primum ex armeniaco textu in latinum conversum etc., 1818; S. Ephrem Evangelii concordati expositio, 1827. - Linguistic works: his monumental work was the Armenian-Latin-Greek dictionary, called Haigazian, encompassing the whole of Armenian culture, 2 vols., 1836.
