BAEUMKER, CLEMENS. - Philosopher and historian of ancient, patristic and medieval philosophy, b. in Paderborn on 16 Sept. 1853, d. in Munich on 7 Oct. 1924. In 1883 he was professor in Breslau, in 1900 in Bonn, in 1903 in Strasbourg, and from 1912 in Munich. He applied himself in particular to the knowledge of Aristotelian and Thomist philosophy. As a philosopher his attempt in epistemology to reconcile certain idealistic demands with the objectivism of Aristotle and of St. Thomas remains worthy of mention.
As a historian of philosophy his name remains linked to the vast collection of medieval studies and texts Beiträge zur Geschichte der Philosophie des Mittelalters, which he began publishing from 1891, and to the following monographs: Das Problem der Materie in der griechischen Philosophie des Mittelalters, Munich 1891, Die impossibilia des Siger von Brabant (Beiträge, 2), Münster 1898 (Beiträge, 3, 11), ibid. 1908; Die christliche Philosophie des Mittelalters (Die Kultur der Gegenwart, 1, v.) Berlin 1909, 2nd ed. 1913; Der Platonismus im Mittelalter, Munich 1916.
