BAEUMKER, CLEMENS. - Philosopher and historian of ancient, patristic, and medieval philosophy, born at Paderborn on 16 Sept. 1853, died at Munich on 7 Oct. 1924. In 1883 he became professor at Breslau, in 1900 at Bonn, in 1903 at Strasbourg, and from 1912 at Munich. He devoted himself particularly to the study of Aristotelian and Thomistic philosophy. As a philosopher, his attempt in epistemology to reconcile certain idealistic demands with the objectivism of Aristotle and St Thomas remains worthy of mention.
As a historian of philosophy, his name is associated with the extensive collection of studies and medieval texts, Beiträge zur Geschichte der Philosophie des Mittelalters, which he began publishing in 1891, and with the following monographs: Das Problem der Materie in der griechischen Philosophie des Mittelalters, Munich 1891; Die Impossibilitas des Siger von Brabant (Beiträge, 2), Münster 1898; (Beiträge, 3, 11),
