BALBI (Balbus), Girolamo. - Humanist, bishop of Gurk, b. in Venice ca. 1460, d. in 1535. A disciple in Rome of Pomponio Leto, he was later in Paris, whence the persecution of the poet laureate Fausto Andreini forced him to flee. He then taught in Vienna, in Buda and in Prague. In 1515, through the good offices of King Ladislaus, he was appointed provost of the cathedral of Pozsony, and entrusted with various missions. In 1523 he was appointed bishop of Gurk. Charles V had him among his counsellors. He left verses, orations, treatises on history, philosophy and politics.
