BARBATO, Saint. — Born in Cerreto at the beginning of the 7th century, died on 19 February 682. His life, written in the 9th century, is legendary. He succeeded Ildebrando as bishop of Benevento in 663; he was at the same time bishop of Siponto and in 665 obtained as suffragan dioceses Boiano, Larino and Ascoli Satriano. He took part in the Roman Council of 680 and, it seems, in that of Constantinople in 681. He exercised a beneficial influence on Duke Romualdo and worked successfully to eradicate Lombard superstitions.
His body is venerated in Benevento, where it was placed beneath the high altar of the cathedral by
