BARTHEL, JOHANN KASPAR. – German canon lawyer, born in 1697, died on 8 April 1771. Educated by the Jesuits, he was ordained a priest in 1721. From 1725 to 1727 he studied in Rome, where he was a pupil of Lambertini (Benedetto XIV). From 1728 until his death he was professor of canon law at the University of Würzburg.
A prolific writer on delicate questions of public and international law, he represented a current that managed to remain within the bounds of orthodoxy, while nevertheless displaying an anti-curial attitude.
