BARTHEL, Johann Kaspar. – German canonist, b. 1697, d. 8 April 1771. Educated by the Jesuits, he was ordained priest in 1721. From 1725 to 1727 he studied in Rome, where he was a pupil of Lambertini (Benedict XIV). From 1728 until his death he was professor of canon law at the University of Würzburg.
As a writer on delicate questions of public and international law, he represented a current that knew how to remain within the limits of orthodoxy while showing an anti-curial stance.
