Barthel, Johann Kaspar

BARTHEL, JOHANN KASPAR. - German canonist b. in 1697, d. on 8 April 1771. Educated by the Jesuits, he was ordained a priest in 1721. From 1725 to 1727 he studied in Rome, where he was a disciple of Lambertini (Benedict XIV). From 1728 until his death he was professor of canon law at the University of Würzburg.

A prolific writer on delicate questions of public and international law, he represented a current that managed to remain within the limits of orthodoxy, while showing an anti-curial attitude.
