BARTOLOMEO VENETO. - Painter; notices of his activity run from 1502 (Madonna and Child, Correr Museum, formerly the Donà delle Rose collection) to 1530 (Martinengo Portrait, National Gallery, London). A Cremonese by origin, B. worked first in the Venetian circle of Giovanni Bellini, distinguishing himself by the incisive plastic research that suggests a direct recourse to Mantegna, rather than relations with the art of Dürer (Circumcision in the Louvre, 1506). Summoned to Ferrara, he painted in the rooms of Lucrezia Borgia (1505-1507); after a stay in Bergamo (Pietà, in S. Pietro at Orzio) he went to Milan, where he felt the influence of the Leonardesque masters, in particular of Boltraffio (Madonna at the Ambrosiana, ca. 1512; St. Catherine in the Städelinstitut in Frankfurt). In his last period (after 1520) he partakes of the precious mannerist taste of the time, accentuating certain northern harshnesses that are typical of him, and the decorative richness of his draperies. Among his best works are the portraits, famous being that of a gentleman in the Corsini Gallery in Rome.
