BAZIANUS. - Canonist, born in Bologna, died 22 Feb. 1197. He was a canon of the cathedral of Bologna. A large number of glosses on the texts of Gratian’s *Decretum* are attributed to him, on the basis of the sigla *Ba* or *Jax* that accompany them. It is supposed that these formed part of a complete apparatus that he would have written around the text of Gratian. He has been confused with Ioannes Bassianus, a Cremonese legist of his time and one of the leading masters of the advanced civilist school of Bologna.
A legal opinion (*consilium*) rendered by B. on 20 Apr. 1192 has also been attributed to him by Kantorowicz (*Über die Entstehung der Digestenvolgata*, ed. Mommsen, Weimar 1910, pp. 27-32).
