BAZIANUS. - Canonist, b. in Bologna, d. 22 February 1197. He was a canon of the cathedral of Bologna. To him is attributed, on the basis of the sigla Ba, or Bax, that accompany them, a numerous series of glosses on the texts of Gratian's Decretum. It is supposed that they formed part of an entire apparatus, which he would have written around the Gratian text. He has been confused with Ioannes Bassianus, the Cremonese legist, his contemporary, one of the principal masters of the developed civil-law school of Bologna.
To B. was also attributed, by Kantorowicz, a legal opinion (consilium) rendered by him on 20 April 1192. (Über die Entstehung der Digestenvulgata, ed. Mommsen, Weimar 1910, pp. 27-32).
