BAZIANUS. – Canonist, born in Bologna, died on 22 February 1197. He was a canon of the cathedral of Bologna. A large series of glosses on the texts of Gratian’s Decretum is attributed to him, on the basis of the sigla Ba or Bax that accompany them. It is supposed that they formed part of a complete apparatus that he would have written around the Gratian text. He has been confused with Ioannes Bassianus, a Cremonese civilian jurist and his contemporary, one of the principal masters of the highly developed civil-law school of Bologna.
Kantorowicz also attributed to B. a legal opinion (consilium) issued by him on 20 April 1192. (Über die Entstehung der Digestenuolgata, ed. Mommsen, Weimar 1910, pp. 27–32).
