Bazin, Jean-Baptiste

BAZIN, JEAN-BAPTISTE. - French Franciscan ascetical writer, b. at Auxonne (Côte-d'Or) in 1637, d. at Dijon in 1708. A bachelor of theology at the Sorbonne, he was guardian in several convents and in 1672 made a journey to Rome. He wrote a life of St. John of Capistrano (Vignieu 1692); Eclaircissements sur la sainte

Messe justifiés par l'Écriture, les conciles et les Pères (Paris 1688); La grande Messe et la manière de l'entendre (Lyons 1687).

His principal work is the Praxis recollectionis annuae ad usum ff. Min. de Observantia (Lyons-Paris 1686), dedicated to François de Harlay, archbishop of Paris. The first writing of its kind in Franciscan ascetical literature, it was composed to facilitate the practice of the annual retreat of 7 or 8 days imposed on the whole Order by the general chapter of Toledo (1658).
