BERARDO, Pietro, Accursio, Adiuto, Ottone, Saints. - Protomartyrs of the Franciscan Order: of whom Otto was a priest, Berard a subdeacon, and the others lay brothers. In 1219 they were sent among the Saracens by St. Francis himself; after a brief stop at Alenquer, they sailed for Seville, then the capital of the Moorish kings. They began to preach the Gospel before the palace of the king himself, who ordered them to be beheaded, but then, fearing the wrath of the Christian princes, had them shut up in a tower and afterward sent them to Morocco. This was the place assigned to them by St. Francis. Here several times, even in the presence of the king Miramolin (Mostanser), they attacked Muhammad and the Qur'an, preaching Jesus and His law, confirming it with the miracle of water made to spring forth to quench the thirst of the people. Fearing the conversion of the people, Miramolin killed them with his own scimitar on 16 January 1220 at Marrakesh. The bodies of the martyrs were carried with great pomp to Coimbra; Sixtus IVcanonized them on 7 August 1481. Feast on 16 January.
