BENVENUTO, da Gubbio, Blessed. - A nobleman and soldier of Gubbio, in 1222 he was received among the Friars Minor by St. Francis, who was certain that B. would replace the valor of arms with the heroism of the virtues. Indeed, in a short time he became foremost in the most humble offices. Entrusted with the care of the lepers, overcoming his natural repugnance, he served them with fatherly affection, showing himself neither tired nor wearied, although he practiced the harshest penances. Because of his charity he was called the "apostle of the lepers." Struck by a grave illness, he died at Corneto in Apulia in 1232. At Illiceto, where a relic (an arm) is venerated, his feast was celebrated on May 5; in the Franciscan Order, however, it falls on 27 June. Innocent XII permitted its cult within the Order, but the date of the indult is not known.
