BERNARDI, GAETANO. - Cassinese Benedictine of the abbey of Montecassino, scholar and educator, b. at Caramanico (Chieti) on 1 Nov. 1827, d. at Montecassino on 7 Feb. 1895. He taught literature at Sulmona and at Naples; in 1868 he retired to Montecassino, and in 1870 he took his religious vows. In 1887 he was chosen by Leo XIII as the first abbot of St. Anselm in Rome, having been called there to head the Benedictine college then being re-established. In that office he was of valuable assistance to Cardinal Dusmet, and with him he cooperated in carrying out the Pope's ideas, which aimed at organizing the various Benedictine Congregations into a fraternal confederation. Once this had been formed and its primate elected, B. returned to Montecassino. In 1894 he was made president of the Cassinese Congregation, but he could remain in that office only a short time, for the following year he died. Among his published works, mention should be made of the Avviamento all'arte del dire, which has gone through several editions, even recently, after the first of 1869.
