EDUARDO BORROMEO. — Cardinal, b. 3 Aug. 1822 at Milan, d. 30 Nov. 1881 at Rome. Ordained priest personally by Pius IX, he stood beside this Pope during the Roman days of ’48 and accompanied him to Gaeta. During the cholera of ’54–55 he labored with the utmost zeal, especially bringing aid to the orphans of the victims. He also took a keen interest in the Christian education of youth, and for this purpose founded various schools. In the consistory of 13 March 1868 Pius IX created B. cardinal with the title of S. Prassede. He played a major role in the establishment of the Lombard Seminary in Rome.
