Borromeo, Edoardo

BORROMEO, EDOARDO. - Cardinal, b. 3 Aug. 1822 in Milan, d. 30 Nov. 1881 in Rome. Ordained priest personally by Pius IX, he stood at the side of this Pope during the days of the Roman '48, and accompanied him to Gaeta. During the cholera epidemic of '54-'55 he labored with the greatest zeal, bringing aid above all to the orphans of the victims. He also had at heart the Christian education of youth, and to this end he established various schools. In the consistory of 13 March 1868 Pius IX created B. cardinal of the title of St. Praxedes. He played a great part in the founding of the Lombard seminary in Rome.
