BORROMEO, EDOARDO. – Cardinal, b. 3 Aug. 1822 in Milan, d. 30 Nov. 1881 in Rome. Ordained a priest personally by Pius IX, he remained at this Pope’s side during the days of the Roman ’48 and accompanied him to Gaeta. During the cholera epidemic of 1854–55, he devoted himself with the greatest zeal to assisting especially the orphans of its victims. He also took a keen interest in the Christian education of young people, and for this purpose founded several schools. In the consistory of 13 March 1868, Pius IX created B. a cardinal of the title of S. Prassede. He played a major role in the establishment of the Lombard seminary in Rome.
