BONOMI, ERMETE

BONOMI, ERMETE. — Archivist, born in 1734 in Milan, died there on 22 April 1816. A Cistercian monk and priest, he held the positions of librarian and archivist at the monastery of Chiaravalle; he later became archivist at the monastery of S. Ambrogio, as well as professor of diplomatics, remaining there until the suppression of the monastery in 1798.

An indefatigable worker, he compiled a series of registers and indexes containing copies of documents and charters preserved in the archives of the aforementioned monasteries. These manuscripts by Bonomi, which constitute a valuable source for the political and religious history of Milan, especially during the Middle Ages, are currently housed in the Biblioteca Brandense.
