Bonomi, Ermete

BONOMI, ERMETE. - Archivist, b. in 1734 at Milan, d. April 22, 1816 there. A Cistercian monk and priest, he held the offices of librarian and archivist of the monastery of Chiaravalle; he later became archivist of the monastery of S. Ambrogio, as well as professor of diplomatics, and remained there until the suppression of that same monastery, in 1798.

An indefatigable worker, he compiled a whole series of registers and indexes, containing copies of documents and diplomas preserved in the archives of the aforementioned monasteries. These manuscripts of B., which constitute a precious source for the political-religious history of the Milanese area, especially during the Middle Ages, are currently in the Braidense library.
