BONOMI, ERMETE

BONOMI, ERMETE. – Archivist, born in 1734 in Milan, died there on 22 April 1816. A Cistercian monk and priest, he held the positions of librarian and archivist of the monastery of Chiaravalle; he later became archivist of the monastery of S. Ambrogio, as well as professor of diplomatics, and remained there until the suppression of the monastery itself in 1798.

An indefatigable worker, he compiled an entire series of registers and indexes containing copies of documents and diplomas preserved in the archives of the aforementioned monasteries. These manuscripts of B., which constitute a valuable source for the political and religious history of the Milanese territory, especially during the Middle Ages, are currently held in the Braidense Library.
