BOTTICINI, FRANCESCO. - Painter, b. in Florence in 1446, d. there in 1497. Criticism, basing itself on the only documented work (the altarpiece for the collegiate church of Empoli, 1484-91), has reconstructed the artist's personality, attributing to him works in which influences of Lippi, of Verrocchio, of A. del Castagno, of Cosimo Rosselli, of Pollaiolo or of Botticelli succeed one another, or coexist, and has concluded with the label of "eclectic." B. nevertheless possesses a delicate grace of his own (St. Sebastian, in the Uffizi, formerly the Cinotti property; panels with the Madonna adoring the Child), and a pleasantly narrative taste (Banquet of Herod, in the Empoli altarpiece) that recalls Ghirlandaio and may explain the traditional claim of an early education under Neri di Bicci.
