JACOPO CHIMENTI called l'EMPOLI. — Painter born in Empoli ca. 1554, died in Florence on 30 Sept. 1640, pupil of Maso di S. Friano, a Mannerist in the orbit of Cecchino Salviati, l'E. remained faithful to the precepts of Pontormo and more so than Andrea del Sarto.
Active chiefly in Florence, Pistoia and Empoli itself, the painter developed his own noble style characterized by the monumentality of compositions with a somewhat antiquated imprint, which he nevertheless tempered with careful observations from life. Thus in *S. Carlo Borromeo and the Rospigliosi Family* in S. Domenico, Pistoia, and in *The Incredulity of S. Thomas* in the collegiate church of Empoli, in *Susanna at the Bath* in the Hofmuseum of Vienna, and in *The Supper at Emmaus* in the Schiff Giorgini collection in Rome.
