EMPOLI, JACOPO CHIMENTI detto l'. – Painter, born in Empoli around 1554, died in Florence on 30 September 1640; a pupil of Maso di S. Friano, and a Mannerist working within the orbit of Cecchino Salviati, l'E. remained faithful to the precepts of Pontormo and even more so to those of Andrea del Sarto.

Active chiefly in Florence, Pistoia, and Empoli itself, the painter developed his own noble style, characterized by the monumentality of compositions bearing a somewhat antiquated imprint, which he nevertheless tempered with attentive observations from life. Such are the S. Carlo Borromeo e la famiglia Respigliosi, in S. Domenico at Pistoia; the Incredulità di S. Tommaso in the collegiate church of Empoli; the Susanna al bagno in Vienna’s Hofmuseum; and the Cena in Emmaus in the Schiff Giorgini collection in Rome.
