BOURDICHON, JEAN. - Painter and miniaturist (b. ca. 1457, d. 1521), he was the head of the "school of Tours" at the close of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th, inheriting the legacy of Jean Fouquet. He worked for Louis XI, for Charles VIII, for Louis XII (whose favorite artist he became) and finally for Francis I; he decorated with elegance of motifs, richness of color, and pleasing grace of forms the Hours of Anne of Brittany (National Library of Paris, ms. lat. 9475: he received payment for it in 1508), elaborating Flemish and Italian models with delicate sweetness and displaying greater technical than inventive qualities. He was one of the major artists of the early French Renaissance; several codices of the National Library of Paris are attributed to him (Hours of Aragon, earlier than 1494; Hours of Charles VIII, earlier than 1498; missal of Tours), along with some portraits and a triptych of the Passion (1485) in St. Anthony's at Loches.
