GENEROSO CALENZIO. — Erudite Oratorian, born in Naples in 1831, died in Rome on 11 Dec. 1915. He entered the Congregation of the Oratory in Rome in 1863 and devoted himself chiefly to historical studies.
He was Prefect of the Vallicella and later a writer in the Vatican Library; part of his studies, especially in annalistics, remained unpublished. Instead, he published the Vita e apologia di Bonifacio VIII (1862); Esame critico-letterario delle opere riguardanti il Concilio di Trento (1869); Saggio di storia del Concilio di Trento sotto Paolo III (1869); Documenti inediti o nuovi lavori letterari sul Concilio di Trento (1874); and his masterpiece La vita e gli scritti del card. Cesare Baronio (1907). In the years 1894–95 he directed the periodical S. Filippo Neri on the occasion of the centenary of the saint, always showing a great interest in archaeological research, especially on the Catacombs. He was a witty and typically Oratorian character.
