CALENZIO, GENEROSO. - Oratorian scholar, b. at Napoli in 1831, d. at Roma on 11 Dec. 1915. In 1863 he entered the Congregation of the Oratory in Roma and devoted himself chiefly to historical studies.
He was prefect of the Vallicella and later a writer at the Vatican Library: part of his studies, especially in annalistics, remained unpublished. He did publish, however, the Vita e apologia di Bonifacio VIII (1862); Esame critico-letterario delle opere riguardanti il Concilio di Trento (1869); Saggio di storia del Concilio di Trento sotto Paolo III (1869); Documenti inediti o nuovi lavori letterari sul Concilio di Trento (1874); and his masterpiece, La vita e gli scritti del card. Cesare Baronio (1907). In the years 1894–95 he directed the periodical S. Filippo Neri on the occasion of the saint’s centenary, while continuing to show great interest in archaeological research, especially on the Catacombs. He was a witty and typically Oratorian character.
