Calenzio, Generoso

CALENZIO, GENEROSO. - Erudite Oratorian, b. in Naples in 1831, d. in Rome on 11 Dec. 1915. He entered the Congregation of the Oratory of Rome in 1863 and devoted himself preferably to historical studies.

He was prefect of the Vallicella and then scrittore of the Vatican Library: part of his studies, especially in annals-writing, remained unpublished. He did publish the Vita e apologia di Bonifacio VIII (1862); Esame critico-letterario delle opere riguardanti il Concilio di Trento (1869); Saggio di storia del Concilio di Trento sotto Paolo III (1869); Documenti inediti o nuovi lavori letterari sul Concilio di Trento (1874); and his masterpiece La vita e gli scritti del card. Cesare Baronio (1907). In the years 1894-95 he directed the periodical S. Filippo Neri on the occasion of the saint's centenary, always demonstrating a great interest in archaeological research, especially on the Catacombs. He was a witty and typically Oratorian character.
