CATTANEO, RAFFAELE. — Architect and art writer, b. in Rovigo in 1860, d. 7 Dec. 1889. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice and in 1887 was commissioned by the Venetian Catholics to design the large bronze candelabrum to be offered to Leo XIII on the occasion of his sacerdotal jubilee.
In 1889 he published the results of his research in a volume entitled *L'Architettura in Italia dal sec. IV al Mille circa*, still fundamental today for the criticism of previous historiography on the subject and for the abundance of direct examinations conducted on works of art. An admirer and specialist especially of Byzantine architecture, he also executed in that style the tomb of Pius IX in the narthex of the Pelagian basilica of St Lawrence outside the Walls in Rome.
