CERACCHI, GIUSEPPE. – Sculptor, born in Rome on 4 July 1751, died in Paris on 30 January 1802. A pupil in Rome of Tommaso Righi, after a stay in Florence he spent most of his life in Milan; from there he undertook frequent journeys: to England (1773), to Holland, to Austria, and to America (1791). He was guillotined for having taken part in a plot against Napoleon. A skilled portraitist, he sculpted many busts of notable figures, including those of Pius VII, Washington, and Napoleon.
