Ceracchi, Giuseppe

CERACCHI, GIUSEPPE. - Sculptor, b. in Rome on 4 July 1751, d. in Paris on 30 Jan. 1802. A pupil in Rome of Tommaso Righi, after a stay in Florence he spent most of his life in Milan; from there he undertook frequent journeys: to England (1773), to Holland, to Austria and to America (1791). He was guillotined for having taken part in a plot against Napoleon. A skilled portraitist, he sculpted many busts of distinguished figures, among them those of Pius VII, Washington and Napoleon.
