CERACCHI, GIUSEPPE. — Sculptor, born in Rome on 4 July 1751, died in Paris on 30 January 1802. A pupil in Rome of Tommaso Righi, after a sojourn in Florence he spent most of his life in Milan; from there he undertook frequent journeys: to England (1773), the Netherlands, Austria, and America (1791). He was guillotined for having participated in a conspiracy against Napoleon. A skilled portraitist, he sculpted many busts of distinguished figures, including those of Pius VII, Washington, and Napoleon.
