CAYRON, PIERRE-JEAN. - French Jesuit, b. at Rodez on 17 Jan. 1672, entered the novitiate of Toulouse in 1687, d. in great fame of sanctity at Toulouse on 31 Jan. 1754. After fourteen years of teaching letters and philosophy, he spent his whole life at Toulouse, as master of novices and rector of the novitiate (1723-29 and 1733-37), rector of the college (1729-33), superior of the professed house (1737-1744), then spiritual father and for some time instructor of the fathers in the third year of probation. He was distinguished for humility and mortification and enjoyed a reputation as an eminent thaumaturge. He effectively promoted the cult of St. Francis Regis and his canonization (1737). The processes for his beatification have been delivered to the Sacred Congregation of Rites.
