Cenchrae

CENCRE (ΚΕΤΖΗΛΊ, CENCHRAE)

CENCHRAE (Greek Ketzilí, Cenchrae). - Currently Kehris, the ancient port of Corinth that served for communications with the East. At C. St. Paul embarked on his return from the second apostolic journey with Aquila and Priscilla, who had there discharged a Nazirite vow by shaving their heads (Acts 18:18). A Church was organized there, in which the deaconess Phoebe carried out fervent charitable activity. In 58 St. Paul sent from C. the important Epistle to the Romans (v.), availing himself of the service of Phoebe (Rom. 16:1-2).
